I figured sense we are in the middle of summer why not put on a pair of roller skates and do some skating. I find myself checking to make sure that all my body parts are still intact and there is no bruising or road scrapes on me. Sweating like a pig I awake from this nightmare. Me, roller skating not going to happen. But now I got skates in my head what the hell am I going to do. As I’m having my morning cup of coffee it hits me.

Melanie Safka still tours to this day and puts out new music ever so often. She was one of the privileged artists that got to play at the original Woodstock festival. Rumor has it that right after playing she wrote the song Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) Back in the seventy’s she got lots of radio play from a few of her songs. I’ll add some links on the widget for a few of them.
Brand New Key came out in 1971 and reached number one on the Billboard Top 40 singles chart in December. In 1972 it was ranked at number 9 on the Billboard Year End Hot 100 singles of 1972.
Brand New Key is a very simple folk song. Written by Melanie and produced by her husband Peter.

I know the old rollerskates are long gone, but I so wish I’d kept the key I remember her rather scratchy voice singing out, “I think that we should get to gether and try it out and see.” I’d forgotten she’d written Lay Down.

It’s funny how certain artists were popular once but ignored later on. I think Melanie’s one of them. She was sort of folk-pop, and kind of fell in the crack between the two. This was a cute song. “Lay Down” and “Beautiful People” I like, also. DCW, I’ve decided my ashes will be scattered on the fields of Woodstock.

Pete I agree with you that she fell through the cracks. “Cute” is a excellent word to use for the tune and what a great place to have your remains scattered.
