I’m not much into politics but with all the bullshit that America has had to listen to in the last year from politicians and a certain business man running for President I thought about a couple lines from this song from the classic band The Animals.
The rooms were so much colder then
My father was a soldier then
And times were very hard
When I was young, when I was young
I smoked my first cigarette at ten
And for girls I had a bad yen
And I had quite a gall
When I was young
When I was young it was more important
They’d more pain but they laughed much louder yeah
When I was young, when I was young
I met my first love at thirteen
She was brown and I was pretty green
And I learned quite a lot
When I was young, when I was young
When I was young it was more important
They’d more pain but they laughed much louder yeah
When I was young, when I was young
My faith was so much stronger then
I believed in fellow man
And I was so much older then
When I was young, when I was young
When I was young, when I was young
When I was young, when I was young
Has to be 1967. Hope it’s not too rude to post this ’67 report of a live concert in SF.

“Ah, but I was so much younger then, I’m older than that now.” So much bullshit going on all around us. I can hardly turn on the news any more! (PS. I love these lyrics.)

I had other ideas about the post but with the president hopefuls out here in CA campaigning for the last week or so that is all we have been hearing about. That and senseless murders. Boy your right the news does really suck!!!

Dennis, I’m afraid it’s only going to get worse when the conventions role around. I foresee riots and violence. We’ll be looking at another revolution in this country if something doesn’t change soon. I’m thinking of joining up with the people who are working toward term limits for Congress. It might be the only peaceful way of getting some type of positive change into our system. I’ve decided my next post is going to be about something lighter – flowers and hummingbirds, I think. Have a peaceful week and take care. Clare

Wasn’t it the 72 Chicago convention that was so violent? I really don’t remember it but have seen parts of documentaries that have talked about it. This year I’m wondering if the Republican convention will come anything close to that one.

I remember it well. 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago when Richard Daly was Mayor. He made everything so much worse when he tried to keep anti-war demonstrators from protesting outside the convention by not issuing permits. It was protestors vs police and it was ugly! Lots of peaceful demonstrators, locals and others were injured in the riots that broke out in Grant Park. Everything was on the nightly news and it divided the Democratic Party. In the end, Richard Nixon became President and I’m not even going there! But it did eventually result in establishing presidential primaries as opposed to state conventions to choose delegates to the convention, thus enabling under -represented groups and individuals more opportunities for participation in the process.
I think this convention is going to be worse. There will be blood.

I knew that I could count on you to clarify it all for me. Trump had a campaign speech just yesterday out here and there was punches and blood between protesters and supporters.

So many things happened around that time: assassinations, war protests. I was a sophomore in college then and many young people were feeling very disenfranchised . It only got worse when many of us, looking for peace and voting for our first time, put our hopes in George McGovern in 1972.
Just as then, I see bad days coming for the US. It’s hard to ever forget those years of upheaval. I’m an old lady now, but I have a really good memory and I see no good coming from giving someone like Trump a podium and a following. Those followers are looking for anything but peace. To me, it reeks of Germany just before WWII. I hope I’m wrong, but as I said, either way, there will be blood.

When we talk about him here Hitlers name always comes up in the conversation. That and if he is elected should we bail the country before he starts WWIII

There are many similarities, unfortunately. I can only hope people have studied their history and learned something.
