ELP “Pictures at an Exhibition”

If you where asked to name three progressive rock bands of the 1970’s almost everybody asked would have these two bands on the list. The first being the progressive rock rock band Yes who’s music got much more air play on the radio since they tended to be a more mainstream and the other would be Emerson Lake & Palmer (ELP). We here at Forgotten Rock Classics tend to lean more on the side on ELP as the greatest progressive rock more then Yes. Maybe we are a little bias on our opinion being that we rank or first ELP as one of the best concerts we have ever been to. Carl Palmer’s drum solos alone were worth the price of admission.

Pictures at an Exhibition is ELP’s take on the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky’s piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition and was recorded live at Newcastle City Hall, UK in March 1971. This album showcases more of the bands classical side more then their other albums. This is also about the time people started to really notice Keith Emerson’s mastery of the Moog Synthesizer. And the last piece of the puzzle that completed the band was bass guitar, lead guitar and singer Greg Lake’s.

As a dedication to a fellow blog writer that we follow hear at Forgotten we have taken the blank pictures inside of the album cover and put in few paintings from some of his posts. Loud Alien Noise by Tobe does blogs about many different things but the ones that stick out to us the most are his posts supporting artists who do a variety of vivid imagery. We thought that the beauty of some of this often strange and odd drawings truly did belong inside of a picture frame. Here are a few of our favorite posts for your viewing enjoyment:

BTW if you like mind expanding material…The paintings of Travis louie mixing Victorian looks and very weird creatures is quite mind buggling lol!! http://tobedamit.com/2014/12/29/travis-louie/ I got lots of views for this one…Over 2000 I thik but for some weird reasons it seems the like buttons don’t appear to people who aren’t part of wordpress… Anyways.. I’m pretty sure you will love this one… It’s very…Lovecraft…?

  6. I’m very happy that I got to draw some attention to these extremely gifted artists. I’m also honored you noticed my blog. I myself btw am a huge fan of King Crimson and of Van Der Graaf Generator as well as Genesis during the Peter Gabriel era. I’m going through a very rough patch nowadays and it gave me a little happiness to know that my blog is worth mentioning. It means a lot to me. Especially nowadays.

    • Tobe I hope everything turns out ok for you. We have missed seeing your posts the last few weeks. We are looking forward to seeing more posts in the future from you. I agree with your thoughts on Genesis. When I first saw ELP the opening band was Journey before Steve Perry and they rocked the joint. But they just like Genesis turned into a pop group looking for more money and sacrificing making the original music that make them so unique. This post all came about the day I saw the Margaret Keane post and how her painting showcased those big beautiful eyes and this album clicked in my head. King Crimson was so instrumental in the early progressive rock movement that it’s a shame they didn’t get as much recondition that they deserved. Robert Fripp is one of my favorite guitarists. We hope you can get through this rough patch quickly.

      • TY so much. I never thought people would miss my posts. Greg Lake did a fantastic job on King Crimson first album. It really is a band that needs to be into as much as one can. Yes Genesis turned out to be so deceiving after Gabriel left. God!! I hated Phil Collins just for that even though I thought Brand-X was a good band… BTW if you liked the Margaret Mead post I would suggest you check the post I did on the works of Sas Christian!!         • Sas Christian post was awesome I wish that I had seen it before my post.so I could have added one of her painting to my album.. As one that has ZERO ability to do any type of painting or having the thoughts required to vision painting like her and the other artists I just love seeing what they can do. One note on Greg Lake that we have is our favorite tune to play during the holidays is “I Believe in Father Christmas”.

I’m not much of a pianter myself even if I very oftne have some kind of visions of what I would paint, ideas that I have no clue how I would be able to reproduce from the images in my mind. Therefore I share the same admiration you have for those astounding artists! about Greg Lake, I will have to check out that song! Maybe it will become my fav holiday song too!! TY for your interest!!       • TY so very much!! I think my main objective when I created this blog was simply to share the stuff I find interesting. I was curious to see if people would find this interesting so you taking the time to tell me that it is awesome AND mind expanding is extremely rewarding and motivating for me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!! I have had a rough patch lately and I am trying to snap out of it today and finish that article about David Bowie I started so your little compliment has gone a very long way…. I am now back on track and determined to keep going on with my blog from where I left it.             • I didn’t know you were out of Montreal. My daughter and I saw the “Canadians” play the Sharks just last night in San Jose. Not the same team without Price protecting the nets.

              • Yes! So true! We are now (or should be! LOL)) paying the ”Price”! (I think we lost that game?) Despite the fact that our Habs are only the pale shadow of our glorious past victories, I’m rather proud of being from Montreal. I have no idea how we are perceived by people elsewhere but I really love it here. People never cease to amaze me and the scenery has kept a rather ”green” aspect even if Montreal is a rather large city. That is during summer of course. The neverending winter has its ups and downsides but I would be bored if I couldn’t see Mother Nature on the run…Changing colors …. So many colors… My favorite season is Fall.
